Default 3800 Series II V6 block and head casting numbers.

3800 Series II V6 block and head casting numbers.

So the 1997 Camaro RS I bought with a "locked up" engine for $800 turns out to have a remanufactured 3800 engine in it that runs just fine. I found a large hole in the 5-speed gearbox bell housing on the RH side and I think this is what would not allow the motor to turn.

I looked in remanufactured engines for this car and I think the FWD 3800 Series II motors with Super Chargers had larger valves in the cylinder heads.

So is there any casting numbers chart I can lookup to see this is a proper L-36, and it doesn't have the heads or block from an L-32 or an L-67?

I assume the SC FWD 3800's had less compression right?

Was that pistons, or composition chamber CC or both?

I know some of these fly by night remanufacturing shops may use any block and mismatched heads, so I just want to make sure I have a proper L-36 for this car so the PCM gets what it expects and I don't have a bunch of mismatched parts.

I did not search casting numbers but a Supercharger 3800 would have a different pistons and the injectors are in the head instead of the the intake like a NA 3800. Going from a supercharger to NA is backwards from what normally happens. The 3800 SII and SIII is one of the most common engines in junk yards. When maintained and not over reved they are bullet proof. There were many cases of people buying less then 10,000 mile motors for $500. Keep in mind GM put that 3800 in a LOT of cars. Failure rates in the camaro would be higher then all the old man Buick, Olds or a Soccer moms minivan.

The supercharged version had a lot less volume and was normally sought out by guys that drove them more aggressively. Add in that a Supercharger failure could damage the motor and you fine much less in the junk yards. This is why I would doubt a remanufacture would convert a from SC to NA.

BTW Compression was 8.5 in the SC 3800. This was due to the pistons although the heads where different. I do not think the NA intake fits the SC heads. If you did a conversion over to NA without replacing the pistons you would have a 1980's level HP. Maybe 140 HP.
