2001 Camaro Z28 vs 2011 Mustang GT (5.0)

it only weighs 200 pounds more than an fbody and produces 70+ hp more, sorry but a ls1 has little chance

Agreed. I love my LS1, but this 5.0 is 14 years newer and brings a lot more power and other advantages to the table.

I think V8's are going to end up going away and performance engines will be turbo 4's and 6's

No, the government mandate supposedly says that the fleet average needs to be 35MPG by a certain year, 2015 or 2020 I think. Ford and GM are already prepping for that, see their whole new line of small 4 cylinder cars? The Cruze, the Aveo? The new Focus and Fiesta?
These big V8 cars are going to stick around, some might get the Active Fuel Management, turning off 4 cylinders during highway cruising mode. The LS4 in the Impala/Monte Carlo was reported to get 28MPG on the highway in a car that was almost 4,000 lbs with a 5.3 V8, and 303HP. Pretty impressive. These newer motors will only have more amazing specs to put up.
