Heh...heh. Looking forward to getting a 2nd or 3rd gen, a 69 is his dream car, and the title thread is 1998-2000. Anybody up for a game of rock, paper, scissors to help him decide? I'll go first....paper!

please don't say a 69 Camaro is your dream car. There won't be any living with a certain forum member.
My suggestion is to ask yourself a few questions
First, forget the 1st gen unless you have a very good trust fund
next, do you want the vehicle to be powerful, reliable, in good shape in the exterior and interior? Do you now want to perform any repairs for at least 6 months or hopefully longer?
If the answer is yes to all of that, do you have $10,000 or more?

Take my advise here... learn to drive before you learn to drive fast... I know you know... teens always know but you DONT!!! get good at driving first then take a car to the drag strip and find out first hand in a controlled and safe environment how much you dont know about driving fast. Driving fast on the street like in the movies does not turn out like in the movies. You get killed in real life or you end up killing some family. Fast cars should never be first cars.

If you want a Camaro, get a 3.4. As a new driver it has more than enough pep to get your heart going. Sure it doesn't sound cool like "Camaro Z28" or "Iroc-Z" or even "Civic SI Type R with OMG MASSIVE KEWL SPOILER WING and OMG LYK TOTALLY DREAMY NEON LIGHTS EVERYWHEREZ".
But it's different, managable and plenty of pep. It was my first car and I had plenty of good times and fast times in it as I learned how to drive. Mind you I did start on a minivan so I knew a thing or two before hand. Either way get yourself a 3.4 or some other beginner car before you jump into the relatively higher HP cars.
Once you get comfortable with the 3.4 handling dynamics and I dimensions, a step to the Z28 LT1 isn't really that big as you've already learned most of the basics. The step up really just involves managing them better.
Good luck in your quest. Don't kill yourself, or more importantly, anyone else.
P.S Think about insurance. I'm not sure too many insurance companies would insure a virgin driver with such a vehicle, without charging an arm and a leg minimum. And also think of gas costs. Gas costs plenty more for a Z28 than a 3.4 (firstly you use more of it, secondly, it's premium, not regular).

A 69 Camaro was always my dream car too, but it became my 3rd car, not first. That was back in high school a few years ago. Never should have sold that one. Putting the butt of an inexperienced 16 year old in a high performance could be a recipe for disaster. You see it on the news, read it in the paper all too often. You're best off starting with a "normal" car, and one you won't mind as much getting a ding or three. And it's not only your own driving you have to worry about. Kids in the school parking lot seem to park with their eyes closed, I've seen that happen too many times with my kids cars and their friends cars.
