Default 1994 Z28 for $2000. Should I buy?

Needs a new auto trans. It takes 5-6 seconds to drop into gear. He told me this though.

The engine has had some head work done. Not performance just a valve job. The engine has a big idle lope to it and I asked him if it had a cam and he said it was stock. His excuse is one of the mounts may not be tight enough.

He is a mechanic at a local shop and did all the work himself. New a/c compressor, water pump, rack and pinion, lower ball joints. The rear chunk was looked at and some ?rigged spring plates? came out which go rid of a hum. He says someone must have attempted posi traction on the past.

The a/c doesn't work. He said he just never charged it up because they don't have an evacuating machine at his shop. !?!?!? Who puts on a compressor and doesn't charge the system? Sounds fishy.

The clear coat is coming off on the back fenders and the t-tops leak, he says. The window motors need replacing as well as the carpet which smells moldy.

The car has set for a couple of years. This I believe because I saw webs and spiders crawling along the engine.

I'm thinking I offer $1200 and he can take it or leave it. What say you?

i say if you can pick it up between 12-1500$ you should be good with it. cause even if you have to rebuild and change out parts, atleast you have the foundation of the z28 and you wont need a full donor car to do so like you would if it was a v6 like mine lol

You got the right idea, a friend of mine got a car that was $2000 down to $1150. A lot of times people will settle when they have a sure deal in front of them.

the trans is going to kill you your going to either need to get a used 94 2wd 4l60e (they can be hard to find although there in many different cars it HAS to be a 94 trans) or get yours rebuilt which can easily be $1500

Damn! Why does it have to be a 94? I can find a general 4l60e used for 500-800 but they don't specify 94. This sucks.

I was also rolling around the idea of rebuilding it myself. I saw an article with steps. It doesn't look hard if I take my time. They welded together a special tool though. I would have to have someone do that.

Think about... A guy who works at a shop and has the resources to fix the car for cheap and chooses not to. It probably needs a lot of work that he is not telling you. I would pass sound way to fishy to me.

Sounds like the car has not been well maintained. The best project cars to find are the ones that in truly great shape but have one major issue. What you will find is they sell for about the same price as the beaters do. I looked at a lot of V6 projects. Most where neglected for years before they finaly died going price was $800-$1000 for a 3.8/5 speed. I final found a one owner garage kept dealer serviced car with a spun bearing. The lady that owned it had all the records. I got that car for $1000. Put a low miles used motor in it and she is still running strong and paint is still shinning 50K later.
