I suspect some of this may vary by State. Our agent here in Texas told my wife that if we get a separate liability-only policy for our son (who just turned 16), then the price would be about $1,800 a year regardless of what the car was. Because of the exposure to which Torque alluded, he strongly recommends not adding our kids to our policy.
I'll need to struggle with this soon because we've offered to sell our '97 convertible to him for four grand. Until he comes up with the scratch he'll be stuck with our Honda minivan. (grin) Amazing how a Camaro can motivate a young American male, isn't it?

Anyway, we got an update from our insurance broker today. They suggest a separate policy at our same company (Progressive) for our son, with my wife and I as additional drivers. Kid would be limited to ONLY the one vehicle on that policy.
For fairly high liability limits ($100/$300/$50, significantly more than Texas minimums) this will run us about $1,500/year.
I probably need to look at my umbrella policy as well. (sigh)

osduck, Did you get a quote for the Z28 yet? I assume you would be setting it up as your car. I mentioned to my agent about getting a Z28 for me and I have 2 kids and he kind did that face like you don't want to go there. I never got a quote. Course one of my kids has 2 minor claims already and she is only 21 both her fault.
