02 Camaro z28 auto won't go manually into 1st gear
2002 Camaro Z28 auto with 3.23 rear end will not manually go into 1st gear it stays in second. If left in drive or overdrive the car starts in 1st and if punched at appropriate speed drops to first and pulls strong all the way through too. Any info?
Find an open stretch of road with little to no traffic. Manually put the car in 1st gear and get it up to 35 mph. See what the rpm is at. A 245/50/R16 tire converts to a 25.6 inch tall tire. Now, with that, a 3.23 rear, with a 3.08 first gear, your rpms should be roughly 4500. If it is indeed only going to 2nd, the rpms should be about 2400 rpm. Remember to keep it at 35ish as that's the speed I used to figure the rpms.
Knowing the ratio is not the problem I'm almost sure they're 3.23's. Not being able to put it into low manually is the problem. It has 1st in drive and overdrive. The shifter goes to low but the transmission does not
I understand that. That's why I asked you to go out on an open stretch of road, with the shifter in 1st and bring it up 35 mph. If you have it manually in first, and are going 35mph, then your rpms should be around 4500. If they are, then the transmission is going into first as it should. If it is significantly less than 4500 rpms, then the transmission is going to a gear other than first. I'm having you do this to show solid evidence that the transmission is not going into first gear so we can troubleshoot to get the problem fixed.
While your are in the car, make sure, if it is so equipped, that the second gear start switch is not active. If I remember right, it is below the radio. It says SGS on it. Some cars were equipped with it, to force the car to start in 2nd gear to prevent slippage of the wheels in less than ideal conditions.
