You are confusing the RS package with the Y87 option. I believe all the Racks are interchangeable. Meaning the V6 rack will work fine in the Z28 and the reverse. I have read where Z28 and Y87 owner have accidently install slow ratio racks.

It is a common upgrade to put the Z28 quick ratio rack in the V6.

There are 2 different Housings.


LT1 racks are different than LS1 racks, Not sure when the V6 cars got the same Housing as LS1 cars.
My '01 has the same Housing as an LS1 rack.


When I was doing research on this swap, People automatically hollered....You need a LS1 rack. They were referring to the Housing difference. Just trying to get some facts straight, With some help from you guys.


Here is a pic of the difference, The steering shaft input was leaned over for clearance of the Alternator & Exhaust manifolds.

they have apprasiel insurance ,I am working on getting mine appraised ,for $12.000 ,cost about $300,00 per year ,I go to another agent get the appraised value ,then my insurance pays what I actually got in the car ,that's what a lot of classic car owners do,with mine labor was $3200,00 but from the starter to the radiator tranny ,everything but the brakes booster an brake master cylinder ,is new to me ,,the thing they do is they go with parts an engine prices receipts I have an so on,though I probley wont sell it for that amount couse it only worth that to me ,its nice to have an get to protect incase of total loss,an $300 a year is well worth it to me ,think about the guy who has the 70 or 71 an a half like 60.000 ,he has it appraised for that

Got the car to the shop yesterday, 6 miles with no coolant at all, Engine died a block away....Coasted up to the bay door, Only ran 3 stop signs & a right on red without stopping.

Started with rebuilding the Diff, I found the noise it was making...Driver side Carrier bearing was shot. I originally thought it was a Axle bearing.

Everything set right up with the original shims. .030" pinion shim & original 1-piece carrier shims. Surprised me with using a 2-series Carrier & a "Thick" 3-series conversion gear-set.

Replaced the rear rotors & pads, AC-Delco Rotors & GM (PBR) pads.

The Diff build went so smooth, I decided to go ahead & pull the engine/trans today. These cars are unbelievably easy to pull engines on. Took 1.5 hours. I'm sure it is a nightmare without a lift though.

You overheated and seized/ruined the engine. I hope you don't try to sell that paperweight to someone as a "good runner".

vht on those clean breaks,even just a clear coat can last 10 years/? what kinda miles on the donor engine ,I was going to buy a used lt1 for mine but did not want to take the chance ,it was a low miles engine though sounded to good to be true ,do you plan on rebuilding the 5.3 an upgradeing it

Actually after I let it cool down, It lit right off hitting on all 6!...But, Yes the engine is junk, Been hot to many times. I must admit, All it needed was intake gaskets....I just didn't care.


I have the Transmission sold, The buyer gets it all though & he knows the engine is bad.

I live in north Texas, Rust is a Non-Issue here. The original rotors didn't have rust.


I bought the 5.3L in '04, It had under 7,000 miles on it. Put it in a '85 Suburban, It was only used for family trips/Support vehicle back when I had my 5th wheel camper, Didn't like unhitching my diesel. So we used the Suburban as a runaround when camping/hunting It has about 50,000 on it now...At the most. So I know all the history for the last 11 years, Always got Mobil 1 every 5,000, Antifreeze change every 3 years, etc. etc.


Has a LQ9 Cam (Same as late LS1), New valve springs, & Hardened Push Rods.....That's all the upgrades this engine will get. Once I recoup from the swap, I will start building a 6.0L or 6.2L. However I may be happy enough with the 5.3L.

Made some more headway today, Hardest thing was to get the engine/trans loaded in my truck. The hoist I have at home couldn't lift it high enough. Had to let the air out of my rear tires to get the truck low enough to load the engine.


Note to self..Replace hydraulic cylinder on home engine hoist.


Stripped all the suspension/Brake lines & Rack off the V6 K Member.
Got the Engine, Rack, Brake lines mounted on the Spohn K Member, Trans Lines, Headers, Spark plugs, Plug wires, & O2 sensors installed.

They should put this in the projects section ,for me paint adds appeal to the capilpers ,sounds like your on your way ,I had driven a Yukon with one of those pretty powerful engine no doubt,i think it was 6.0
