Default What oil you use on a 1992 305 cui (L03 engine)

Hi all,

Mu question is about a 1992 Firebird 305 (TBI L03 engine). I also have a Camaro hence posting on this forum as I always get great help from this forum. This question may have already been posted, so apologies if I am wasting your time again.

I am trying to do an engine oil change. Confused as to what oil should I use.

I did some google search and it has confusing information. Some say Mobil 1 5-W-30 is the best oil to use but they don’t tell should it be synthetic or non synthetic?

Is it ok to put Synthetic oil ? They say synthetic is thin and May leak ?

also, what is the other type of oil other than synthetic ?

any advice will be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Most oils are a blend of if not full synthetic these days,I run full synthetic in all my rigs as well as my Harley.
Mobil 1 5-W-30 is great oil, that's what I run in my 2001 SS and what came in it from GM when new,if you aren't leaking oil now I wouldn't worry about it but if you are leaking quite a bit maybe something less expensive and change it more often.
I do Mobil 1 5-W-30 at 5000 miles in my LS1,the 305 you have is just a basic small block Chevy and you can run pretty much any oil in it.
If you chose regular dino oil change it at 3000 miles, nothing wrong with regular Pennzoil or Valvoline etc.
I'd just avoid the bargain basement store brands but if your car is leaking a lot even those are probably fine since you'll often be adding more between changes keeping it fresh.
The most important thing is just don't run low on oil,way more important that what oil you're using.

Also if the car gets low miles per year you are better off with Synthetic. Time does not really effect synthetic , Dino oil should be changed every 6 months or so. It will start to break down over time but worse it will hold moisture. Due to the make up, Dino oil can not hold as many detergents as a Synthetics can.

I also like to use a good filter, the matching M1 filter is a less then 20 micron filter. You best filters are between 20-10 Micron. Avoid "racing" filter as many of them allow more flow that more flow means more junk in your oil ways.

If you have dry out seals in the motor synthetic will either hydrate the seal or clean away the already damaged areas. So yes it is possible for synthetic to make an existing leak worse. It will not cause a leak. As for the oil being thinner, that is not right. The 30W indicates how fast the oil flows through a hole at a given temp. Saying one 30w oil is thinner then another 30w oil is like say my 1lb of iron is heaver then 1lb of aluminum.
