Speedometer Jumps
New problem with my 1989 305 v8 camaro . The speedometer is jumping all over the place when i drive. I took a video of it heres the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=We4KiO1OjPg I dont know if those other gages to the right would make any difference but any thoughts on this is appreciated ............i hope its not the vss .

89, i dont believe its got a vss quite yet. depending how you look at it, that would be easier to fix. what you need to do is get a hold of some dry graphite lubricant. the speedo itself needs to be cleaned and relubed. i would also say replacing the speedo cable will help. mine used to jump around a bit, and replacing the cable alone wasnt enough. i dont remember how i got into the speedo to lube it, but it wasnt fun

^ Right, electric speedo wasn't until 1990. To get to the speedo, you'll need to remove the gauge cluster, the clutch dealy could be sticking.
My first thought was a binding cable though. It almost looks like the cable gets bound and wrapped up, then suddenly lets loose making the needle fly up.
I would start by pulling and cleaning the cable and lubing it back up, then take it from there.

Disconnect the cable housing from the trans and pull the cable out from there.
Are there any irregular hard bends or kinks in the cable housing that could cause a bind?
With the cable out, look closely for any frays. Any hangnails will make the cable snag.

the oem cable is also 2 peice (at least mine was). there is a connection near the firewall, just as a heads up. for removing the cluster. look at the cluster. remove the 6 or 8 torx bolts around the trime. remove cover, remove remaining screws. the cluster itself has a few nuts tucked in around the idiot lights, but careful looking will reveal them. be careful pulling it out as its a tight fit around the steering wheel, and the printed electrical board is very sensitive

You can try lubing up the cable , that used to be a commn issue but yours seems too dramtic. We used to always tried lubing up the cable and if that did not worked we sent the speedo out to get repaired. I have never seen one that bad the did not need the speedometer repaired.
Do you have cruise control?

well i just took the dash off because i changed the heater core and when i put everything back together the speedo just sits at 50 mph now . Doesn't even move .....im going to have a friend look at it that used to work for chevy and maybe he can shed some light on what i did to make it stop working all together

any sort of wet lube or grease will render it useless. i did that with the mechanical tach on my old bike. i had to use break clean to clean the grease off and used graphite to relube it. worked great after that
