smoking

Oh you would smell fumes. Either coolant or oil. Need more details. Where is it Comming from? Valve cover, exhaust or both. out of the carb?. What color is it. How's the car performance? Runs rough, shakes, hesitates, mis firing, etc.

Without knowing the color of the smoke or where it is coming from it is just a guessing game. However; if the engine is smoking heavily and still running good, you can probably eliminate a rich fuel mixture. An engine creating as much smoke as you describe from a rich mixture would foul the plugs and run poorly.
Black smoke = rich mixture, misfire, or both.
Blue smoke = oil burner, or oil leaking on hot exhaust and burning off.
Blue smoke under acceleration = bad rings
Blue smoke while coasting = bad valve seals, worn valve guides or valve stems
White smoke = coolant getting into combustion chamber, probably due to bad head gasket, cracked head or block, bad intake manifold gasket, etc..

and the car is still pretty fast and it does run kinda funny hard to explain i think it runs this way because the computer isnt hooked up and there is no sensors hooked up and o2 sensor is broken off
