I'm going to tear the block down and see I think it just needs new rings But in the end what ever it needs it will get it done one way or another I'm going to you one of the eBay rebuild kits or re ring kits and yes I have used them before I got 200k from the rebuild Iv had people tell me a lot of diff opinions about them

honestly, since the block will need machine work (rings alone won't cut it) and the heads should be done, you should price what machine shops will charge including parts.

There aren't merit badges handed out for putting parts back in yourself. At the end of the day the only thing which should matter to you is total out of pocket expense

I had my SBC rebuilt including the heads: parts and labor= $1300

By the time I bought parts myself and paid just for machine work I was past that price.

I've seen a vast majority of third gen sb's that need valve seals over a re-ring, but that is possible.

Is this the same block you intend to use gear drive and a 100 shot of nitrous on?

Idk yet gear drive timing is yes don't know about nitrous I want to but I might save for when I build my motor not talking about the 305 right I'm looking at the diff motors I can drop in it I really like the 302 but I'm also looking into a ls1 I'm doing a twin turbo setup for sure Then I'm thinking about a manual Trans swap then after all said and done use the 305 as my anchor for the yacht But it's all up in the air for right now

a 302? Hopefully you mean the new five-oh Coyote from Ford and not the old gen 1 302 SBC!!!!!!!

A rebuilt truck 350 will outperform the old 302 and please let's not get into the old high revving myth. It's a pushrod engine and a 350 with 48 CID more can make more power, as can a 383

Also, probably 90% of your driving is in the low and mid range so how's that money you spend to support 7,000- 8,000 rpm's work for you?

It's called match the tool for the job and the 302 was created for a very specific purpose.

My suggestion is to make a decision on what you want to do. If your plan is to swap a motor, I would not spend a single penny on what you have now. If you want to spend money on the 305, great. Don't do both or you will never end up where you want to be. You have thrown about a million ideas out there....is the goal to fire as many plans out there and see what sticks? I would advise against that. Pick a plan, put it on paper with an exact realistic budget that accounts for EVERYTHING...then start saving and getting parts as you can. This will be way more cost effective and you'll probobly have it back on the road sooner this way.
