Which side is the alternator on? If the alternator is on the drivers side, it's there because the 68 and older engines used the short style water pump. If it's on the passenger side, then the guy swapped to a long style water pump. You can put the alternator on the other side, provided the head has the right mounting hole in front. You'll need to use the right length water pump, the corresponding upper and lower pulleys (they're different depending on the water pump) and the right mounting brackets. But to me, it would be a lot easier to run new wires to the alternator and leave it where it's at. However you do it WILL be worth while to keep the 327, the 305 will be a BIG BIG disappointment by comparison. On the other hand, if your motive is strictly for selling the car, and you can get your hands on a good cheap 305, swap the engines and keep the 327 for something else.

i ran the engine code and its a 327 from a 69 vett. And yeah i wanna sawp it out cause it has the old points ignition system and i have no clue how to wire the motor so my gauges will work. The 327 runs but it has a holly 750 carb on it and the carb is to big so it runs super rich. The 305 i just found im not sure if it runs. it has the oil still in but hasnt ran in some years. but i figure i can get it going for pretty cheap. I seen a whole rebuild kit for a 305 for under 300$.

Check all the numbers again. 1968 was the last year for the 327 in the Vette. 1969 base engine was the 350.

The engine suffix come up with a few years and 68 is one of them. So i guess it my mistake it must be a 68. He has the newer style water pump on it so the alternator is on the passenger side but due to the heads having the wrong holes it is not inn correct alignment so the belt screams. I think it will go with the 305 just because im selling the car. I will sell the 327 with the car when it get out of the body shop and hits ebay. Now the block number on the 305 i found is V0519SDU. Now if im right this motor is from an 84 Z28. Am i correct? And thanks guys for all your help.
