I asked a mechanic where the pump was on the tank, Its literally in the dead center of the trunk floor. the wires and fuel lines run straight up to the front of the car from there. the little indented groves in the center of the floor mark where the pump is. The center one marks the pump, the 2 to the left and right of it mark the sides of where you'll want to make your cut. just don't cut in the groove itself so you'll be able to close it back up easier. as to the removal...

looking into the trunk, the top side starts a half inch away from the back seat (horizontal cut). then the 3 grooves perpendicular to the back seat, the sides of the cut follows the inside edges of them (vertical cuts). the bottom of the box is 12.5 inches from the top (horizontal cut).

so, you'll have a 8ish wide by 12.5 inch tall hole in the center of the floor pushed up against the back seat.

I just used a grinder to get it started and then tin snips after that. you'll have about 3/4 in clearance between the floor and the tank to play with.
After you're done, you'll want to take a sheet of aluminum and some self tapping sheet metal screws or something and seal it back up so the whole car doesn't smell like gas then.

I tried to word exactly what I did as best I could... lemme know if you have any questions.

This is a guy on another forum who had the same problem... bit lengthy but it might be of some help.

p.s. I got a price quote to have a shop do exactly what I did... it was $160 on labor (4 hours), and then the part cost of the pump. Just one of the options...

yupp pretty much. haha, I was just throwing that disclaimer in there because i've never actually done it on a camaro and although it should be the same, I don't know for sure...
but hopefully that was of some kind of help. My firebird will be up for sale around August as of now anyway, looking to buy a v8 camaro... I like em better.

I have a 96 Z28 and I replaced my fuel pump by cutting the floor. Where you cut is between the rear seat and the trunk well. Just pull up the carpet there (the only thing that can be removed to make it easier is the plastic the jack is behind on the right and the left side piece as well) and cut a hole (about 12" long) in the center section (between the ribs that dent in, I cut 1/4" from the rib). I can't caution you enough that you NEED to make your cut shallow, otherwise you will cut the lines or tank. I used a pneumatic cutoff wheel and scored it until it started to break through.
I used a piece of plywood to keep the sparks from spraying towards the front (prevent carpet fire/keeps mess to a minimum/contained). Swapping the pump is relatively easy, but the narrow hole also makes it easy to cut up your hands on the jagged metal. The pump cost about $150. Doing it this way is easier and less time consuming than dropping the tank. I don't have a pic available, but there are pics online. Hope this helps.
