I doubt if you broke anything, it would take a sledgehammer to break the push rod. Is the rod slid up inside the block a little, enough to slide the arm of the pump under? It may have slid down and now resting on the mounting plate? Then you'll need to grab it with a long nose pliers and slide it up at an angle. I usually just hold it up with my finger and quickly remove the finger and slide the arm under the rod at the same time before it slides back down. Another way is to remove the bolt that is in the front of the block just adjacent to the pump opening. You get a longer bolt, hold the rod up, and turn the bolt in just snug enough against the rod to hold it. Get the pump in, remove long bolt and reinstall short one. And don't forget the gasket first.
