Default Dash Problems

So was the third gen dashes a prob? cause i notice that on a lot of them they had dash cracks. Cause i have a 92 RS resto and it had cracks on it, and then i have an 87 IROC-Z that has some big cracks on it. Did they make them too big so that when youd close the door it would flex the dash enough? or what?

The dash is so big, it hangs out in front, and it flexes and bounces some as you drive. Add to that old age and many years of sun exposure where the vinyl is no longer pliable. And finally expose it to cold weather where the vinyl gets even stiffer and doesn't want to flex at all. Next thing you know, you have a little split. Then the sun beats down on it some more day after day, and the vinyl shrinks and opens up a big crater. There you have it!

They get brittle with age, and it doesn't take a whole lot to stress them enough to crack them. I bumped my knee into the corner of mine awhile back and it did crack at that.

They aren't an easy item to find nowadays either, and expensive at that. I picked up a replacement for $300 after a huge discount.

When you get a new one, handle it with care. Take it off when you park the car for a long period of time, hang it on a set of pegs, rubber coated. If you must set it down, set it on the curved edge, and when it is in the car, keep a sunshade over it when you can.

That's the advice I got, anyways.

Thanks guys, cause its got some huge cracks in it, and i figure i just replace it with a dash pad cover, cheaper haha. but also, kinda to go off thread subject, if you have replaced the stereo in the 87, have you ever had trouble with like Crutchfield saything that almost every single stereo is gonna stick out a half inch? Cause thats not too bad if you dont care but im just curious.
