The Corvette servo has more surface area, enabling more pressure to be applied to the band, which gives a firmer 1-2 shift. I have a 91 RS, and it goes well off the line, but shifts like a slug into second. A servo upgrade is a fairly simple trans upgrade without having to drop the pan.
Some people like to do both at the same time, it depends on what you want to do with it...fry the tires with every shift or what? Keep in mind that even though the claim with a trans kit is that it's supposed to make the friction components of the trans last longer due to less slippage, banging the shifts puts more stress on other things such as the trans mount, u-joints and rear end. Decide how radical you want to go and make sure your other components are strong enough to take it. I would first start with the servo and see if that gives you what you're after.
