Default Cooling fans

Is this normal for my 87, 5.7L? Temp rises to approximately 230 before the cooling fans kick in and bring it down to about 200. (according to the gauge). IT has a new 195 thermostat, which is what the book calls for. Also, are the fans suppose to run even with the ignition off, if its that hot? Mine never come on if the ignition is off. Thanks for your replies.

yes, that is the normal operating temp for a third gen. gm ran them hot to meet emission standards. if it starts going past 245 is when there is a real issue. just make sure you still have the air dam installed under the bumper and that the grille is clear of debri. with the ignition off, the fans will not run. i know that some cars do that, but as far as i am aware, gm didnt do that
