I would do all of the above, but double check the choke wiring. Is it the stock q-jet? If so its got one, I think green wire that slides onto the + prong off the choke. It sounds like that connector could be bad, or you have a bad ground.

As for the secondaries, I had the same problem in my old 305. They would open once I would get them started with my finger. There are a few reasons they don't open

1. Vacuum leak
2. internal spring broken
3. just tarnished/dirty carb
4. more than one mechanic has told me that a bad EGR valve can hinder vacuum, therefore not allowing them to open. I don't know about that.

The choke light has nothing to do with the choke wiring connection at the carburetor. That's after the fact, and the light wouldn't know if it's connected or not. A choke light means there is a problem with the relay or lack of power going to it.
And, your secondaries won't open if the choke isn't opening fully. There is an interlock linkage at the secondaries that prevents them from opening before the engine gets to running temp.

Hmm, thats odd. when I had my new motor in and was just tuning it, I didn't have the choke hooked up and the light was on. I had assumed (you know what they say) that since the circuit was open, the light would come on. Don't know, once I hooked it up correctly, it functioned normally.

Well, if that's also how it works, then I'll certainly stand (or sit) corrected. Everything I understand about how the choke light works didn't include it as a diagnostic for a disconnected wire at the carb.
But, I could be mistaken, there's a first for everything!

Ya I value your posts, but I think my light was on because of a loose connection at the wires. because thats all I did was took them out and looks to make sure the + and - was right and put them back in. Sat in the car turned it back on and problem solve. But I have no experience under my belt So anything you have to say I'll listen.
