So i am in the process of buying a car and i test drove this 1991 Z28 with the 350, 3.23posi, auto, etc. and was going through the paces and it shifted from stop to first to second perfectly, but when it was time to shift into 3rd, its like it just shifted into neutral. I do not know the condition of the fluid but i was wondering if i am looking at a nightmare of buying a new trannyor a simple filter/fluid change. Is this a common problem? Please help.

No....It is not a common problem in my opinion. You are looking at a car that with 16+ years of abused driving and thats is why the tranny may be going south.
