Default 1992 Camaro Z28 Problems.

Hey, First time poster and good to see a cam forums

Anyways, I recently loaned the car to my pops for a sat drive to the junk yard, and he basically lost the key. Now the car will not start. We went to replace the ignition from another camaro and nothing.

I was wondering what are my options, i took it to a mechanic and was told we have to replace a computer or some randomness.

Thanks for any help, The car is a 1992 Camaro Z28 25th Ed.

you will have to either disable VATS or replace the lock and tumbler. There is a resistor on the original key and if VATS doesnt read the right reisistance it will not start.

One more question, So pretty much, im going the disabling Vats route, and im wondering a few things. Since we lost the key, we have no idea what kind of Ohm's Resistance the original key has. I have already replaced the ignition switch to match the new key i got.

What are my options?

There are 15 different values. You can buy a resistor for each value and by trial and error find out which one works, or use a variable resistor, 0 to 15000 Ohm and adjust it till the engine cranks, and then measure the Resistance, and then buy a resistor of the proper value, or leave the variable resistor strapped in. The nominal values in Ohm are: 402, 523, 681, 887, 1130, 1470, 1870, 2370, 3010, 3740, 4750, 6040, 7500, 9530, 11800, all +- 10%.

Dealer used to be able look up the key information based on the Vin. Also the dealer has a box he can use that has all the values. It can be time consuming cause if I remember right everytime you try an incorrect caode you have to wait 5 minutes.

I just bought a 500 pack of resistors from radioshack for $15 with tax, Sorted them out to the closest value to the 15.

One thing im wondering that i read somewhere is trying to keep them as close as to the values as possible, my merging resistors. Should i try this or just use the sorted ones that are close enough to the values?

So i just tried the method, Which is merging a few resistors to match the closest value to the 15, and connecting each end with a Extender cable that i used to the orange cable containing 2 small wires inside. By trial and error, nothing seemed to work, i even tried using it on the side leading down the steering column.

What im i doing wrong? I used this guideline for my methods.

One thing i noticed is that the orangewire leading downwards led to a what seems like a converter then turned into 2 seperate grey/black wires which are the ones i was doing this on.
