87 V6 camaro. automatic.

to remove the transmission on a V6, the motor must also be pulled (or you have to cut holes in the floor)

no thats incorrect, you just need to unbolt the trans from the motor itself and disconnect the driveshaft.you wont be able to use regular jacks as you would need one more heavy duty to give you more clearance to take out the trans from the bottom of the car

so the upper bell housing bolts are accessible on a V6 without cutting the floor?

you should be able to get them, ive done it on a v8 and it can be done

I've removed my trans twice without having to pull the entire eng/trans. It was easier for me to get to the top bolts from the top. I laid on a piece of plywood placed over the upper plenum. I think you might be able to reach them from the bottom by using a really long extension. HTH
