Best upgrades/replacements/maintenance for aging 3.1 RS
Hey everyone,
I've posted here before and you guys give good advice, so I have another one for you.
I have the same 1991 Camaro RS (3.1L V6 Auto) I had forever but because of lack of funds (they're money pits!) It's been sitting for quite a while (about a year now). It starts fine, but when I give it some gas and the rpm comes back down, it sputters and sounds like its going to die or actually conks out. It hasn't been drivable for quite some time and every time I get it fixed, something else breaks.
I have come into around $3000 and want to put it all towards getting her back on the road. I don't want swap the engine or get a different camaro. It has under 50,000 total miles, engine and transmission are both still okay.
If you were given the chance to just outright replace anything that is likely to fail soon/would increase dependability/increase performance what would you buy and in what order? It's so unreliable now that I just want to invest in preventing all of the problems that occur before they happen.

I'm not quite sure that anything can help the reliability of those engines. I too have had problems and don't drive it as much as I'd like to. Best bet is swap the engine for a carburated 305. You'll get a bit more performance and alot more reliable
If you're going to pour $3000 into your car, you should just get a 350. The engine alone will only run you about $1500 if you buy a new one from GM. You will get much more performance, more reliability and the pride of driving a V8. Here is a link that contains the 350 that I think will be perfect for your car.

I too have a 1991 RS and a buddy of mine has had 7 camaros ranging from '85 to '94 and he told me (seeing I have the same problem with the horrible idle and and i also have a tick) is that there was a few small oil leaks and that the oil pump was going bad. I don't know if that helps out your situation but its helping out mine.
Hi there, i see that most of you are telling him to do a v-8 which would get you what you are wanting through swapping of a lot of parts, having a donor car would be better or even getting another camaro with a v-8 in it would be the most simplest.
But i have done ALOT of research and finding and compairing parts and i've have came up with a large list of swappable parts and mod. with the parts and mods I have estimated up to 350HP with 480ftlbs +/- 10%. if you would like i can get you this list i have made, with the details how to do some of the mods like 4 bolt main and using 350 connecting rods and so on.
