Unhappy 1988 Camero starting problem

Hello I can not get my 1988 Camero to start, I think I need to change out the pickup coil, but I can't get to the old one. On top of the old one there is a 6 point star, that looks like a Chinese star with a rod coming out of it, this is what the rotor hooks on to. If anyone knows how to get this off please let me know. Thanks

check for spark at the plugs, if u have spark then dump about a shot glass of gas down the carb/tb and see if it will start for a few seconds. if it does u have a fuel problem. not real sure on a 88 but if the pump is not on the motor then its in the fuel tank.

Hi I have a 91 camaro rs 305 TBI which is starting up fine, but dies whenever I give it gas then let off. Only one injector is firing, would this be the cause to the car dying or is it some sensor. It has brand new icm and I had to bypass the vats system. Please help need car running asap.

acb start a new thread, ull get a much better response. 91 is a batch fire so im thinking its a wiring problem. check your fuses under the hood, black box. should be a couple fuses for the injectors see if theres any damage or bad fuse. how did u check the injectors. do an intro on the intro section too.

If you need the pickup coil you might as well get a new distributor. To replace the coil the distributor must come out of the engine, remove the rolled pin holding the gear on the end, force shaft out of the distributor without damaging the bushings (good luck here) and then you can get to the coil. The rod going to it is the advance rod for the vacuum advance. by the time all this is done and say you didnt need to replace the bushings (which usually get damaged taking the shaft out) you have spent a ton of time and get little to no warranty.

Buy a new distributor (A1 Cardone runs about $100 rebuilt with module) and get a lifetime warranty including the module. That is the way to go if you ask me.

Big D I could not send you a reply via the message system so here it is:

You have covered just about everything else. Make sure you are getting the 12V to the distributor, make sure everything is good. The coil wires under the cap can cause issues, also make sure the carbon button is installed properly in the distributor cap. You should first put the button down the hole, then the rubber ring then the coil. Also if the ground strap on the coil is not in place or if the cap is stripped where that goes it can cause all sorts of headaches. The pick up coil can kinda be tested with the distributor out of the car but you need an analog meter, set it up for DC Voltage and spin the distributor shaft (have the meter probes in the white and green wires from the pickup coil) and you should get a slight voltage. If you don't get any voltage then the pickup coil is bad.

Perfect choice A1 Cardone gives the right offer to their customers looks like you still have a plenty of mileage to that 100 dollar part that has lifetime warranty.
