T56 Conversion
Hey guys...project time!! I have a 90 Camaro Iroc w/350 and a 700R4. The tranny just went out...again...4th time...I'm thinking T56 6 spd conversion. Does anyone have a parts list I can go off of? also..how much am i looking to spend?? Rebuild the 700R4 or T56 conversion...same price?? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance guys??

Hey jcase,
You will be cheaper off rebuilding your existing trans, but you need to ask why it keeps going out.....are you beating the living schlockies out of it, or is the rebuild job junk each time. If you can find a good used T56 you will be good to go. I just did a T56 swap last year with my 91 and it was a lot of work. I bartered with my buddy Hank for the labor and a bunch of parts he had and I did his bodywork for him in return for enough beer to keep me fueled during the job. (Yes, he lost out on that one....his next job deal reads "beer not included!")

I should add. When I say a lot of work, no sweat for a guy that knows how to wrench. Just not a weekend project. You could do it in a very long weekend, but more like a couple of weekends. I have found "easy" and "hard" are very relative terms depending on one's mechanical inclination. Most guys on a forum like this I imagine are heavier duty than even I am and this is not a job to be scared of. You have to figure out a few things, but it's no big deal. Just snag something cheap and get some beers!
