Default Cause of bad 700R4

I found a nice IROC for sale. He says that it starts right up and runs good but makes a tapping noise. When it goes in any gear it wont drive anywhere. Would a torque converter make a tapping noise? Does anyone have any input on why this strange noise might happen from a tranny?

maybe the torq converter isnt bolted in all the way or is loose.have you checked the fluid in the trans ?can you feel it in engage in gear when you shift ?

Its a car on CL... I have only talked to the guy. It is 2 hours away so I wanna know as much as possible before I go there. The first thing I will check is the fluid, then I want to start it up and hear the noise its making and try to pinpoint it. I know nothing about transmissions so I don't know what to expect from a 700 R4 when its broken. I don't how a car with 97k miles would just break a torque converter or flew plate? And would it make a tapping noise when its broken?

anything is possible, you can break a tranny with 100 miles on it.But being 2 hrs away is a long drive just to check a car out, and especially if it has tranny issues, bring a tow truck, i wouldnt even try to drive it.

I have a car trailer that I tow with my Yukon. I also have a 700 R4 tranny sitting in my carport right now!

Check the fluid. $20 bucks says its either burnt or its strawberry milk.
