So I bought a 1982 Camaro Z28 little over three weeks ago and the set up is 383 stroker t10 trans and posi rear end.. Right now I am at a loss of what the current gear ratio is. At 70 mph cruising its at 4k rpm and dyno the car today 271 hp to 336 torque according to the guy dyno testing he said change the gear and car will make easy 400 hp or change trans. what would you say is best street strip gear

 

I think you have 4.10 gears. I'm going to go with 3.42 gears when the time comes. My car is a DD and I hear this is a good ratio for my me and my car.

 

Sounds to me like you have no OD lol. And gears won't affect HP numbers.

Street strip depends on your 4th gear OD ratio. Do you know any of this info? You should not cruise at 4k RPM regardless of what gears you have in there.

 

woh,,, sounds more like you have 456 gears. you need to raise the rear of the car and turn the rear wheel one revolution at the same time count the number of times the drive shaft is turning. if it turns 4 and 1/2 times you have 456 gears, a little over 4 and its 411, about 3 3/4 turns and you have 373's. the hp to the wheels will be effected by gears but the higher gear ratio will give bigger numbers and i dont think you want to go higher. you need either a 6 speed or lower ratio unless you only race the car.

I don't drive it at 4k everyday was one time only cause I bought the car over 110 miles away lol so its only seen city driving and few stop light races

 

The dyno guy said changing gear will change the HP. That is friken funny as heck. The the dyno reads 271 HP now you going to have 271 HP no mater what you do with gears. Dyno runs are always done in the final drive gear of 1:1. The reason they do that is because we are not transfering any power thru any gears. Since it 1:1 everything is turning. This is when the transmission is at its most efficient. If you down shift to 3rd you will lose a small amount of power on the Dyno and if you had a 5 speed and you shifted into an Over Drive you would lose a small amount of power. The Dyno does not care about gearing. It is just a measument of energy the motor is outputing. I would not go back to a guy running a Dyno that does not understand this.

 

he is not talking about changing the gears in the transmission but the rearend. im still thinking you would gain rear wheel hp with 456's as oposed to 273's, ill have to read up on it though cause i was just usein logic. lol. i know it would gain torque at the rear wheels.

 

Changing rear end gears is not going to change power output. Dyno man is confusing torque at wheels with power. Power is how much work you can do in a certain amount of time, torque shows how strong you are.
The typical chassis dyno measures torque and RPM at the wheels and computes the HP. Results are shown as power at wheels at a particular engine RPM.
Horsepower= (Torque x RPM) / 5252 x correction factor

 

I'm gonna say you have 4.11 gears. Provided you still have factory height tires (equivalent to the original 215/65/15's), then at 4,000 rpm's the car would be going 72.7 mph. In 4th gear, your T10 has a final drive of 1:1.

 

So was sitting here talking to a friend does the numbers seem right to you for 383?
