Default What Cam should I get?

I have an all stock 305 in my 1988 Iroc-Z, I'm looking to get a big cam but I don't want to have to upgrade anything else. Any advice will help.

In all honesty man, I don't know that upgrading the cam in a 305 is going to do very much for you. If it were me, I'd save my money for a 350 car and drive that one as is just for the fun of it. The 305 just is not a performance engine.

That said, this tool is really helpful- you answer a few questions, plug in the info on the engine you've got, and it suggests a camshaft for you and even tells you what sort of results you can expect from it.

Don't waste your money on a big cam in a stock 305,you'll probably loose power just to sound cool. I agree to save for a 350 and build that, just a cam itself with no other upgrades doesn't do much for most engines and even less for a 305. You really need a full package that includes at the least a good set of headers and a better intake system and even then you don't want a big cam or you'll still be over cammed. Higher compression pistons, headwork etc. for a really big cam. You gotta pay to play! Speed and power don't come cheap.

Yes, one has to design/build for all parts.
Make a change and a restriction happens elsewhere.
Start with exhaust and work up to the front.
Keep in mind, since an '88, OBD I, you will need either a new preprogramed chip, aftermarket EFI, or switch to carb.
Also, state emissions rules.

What about for a 99 Camaro Z28 5.7 ls1 6speed.
I started with headers and dual exhaust ( hi flow cats , no mufflers ) ,and a SLP lid for the airbox.

I want to get the MSD atomic airforce intake with a bigger throttle body. 92 or 103 ?
and a cam and lifter kit with roller rockers and pushrods.
what cam should I get for hi performance street use.
no serious racing , just want more power , more fun on the street.

I had a 68 442 as a kid and this Camaro seems less powerful.

98 ls1 all different beast put on headers give it a tune an enjoy twice the hp of the 305 ,another thing you can do with your 3rd gen is just put big block in it ,or like said a 350 nice crate engine will wake up that 3rd gen, like say 350hp set up is all you need for the street ,your stock 305 was only like 180hp ,stock iroc 88 year if the car is in tip top shape, there nice cars they just need a better engine an were ok with the 350, the 98 z28 with a good tune an headers can put out about 320hp the olds vg engine 442 put put about 350hp in a much heavyer car, much better performance from the 98 z28 too,an save alot of bucks .some food for thought on both

Go for exhaust work first, if you can't get it out you won't get it in. A good Flowmaster or equivalent is the best start. After that a high flow dual cat setup and then a NICE set of headers. After that try a few intake mods.
