Default wont idle

86 Camaro, tuned port injection 5.0L crate engine with less then 5000 miles. Car ran fine then yesterday when my son started it to drive home it wouldnt idle. He was able to get it home by holding the gas slightly on while putting it in in gear. I have looked things over but will admit I have never worked on a car with tuned port injection. I was first thinking it was an air issue but now Im thinking it could be timing chain/belt? Not sure which it has. Also wouldnt know how to check it?

Any ideas?

how does it run otherwise? does it smell like gas really strongly when its at a low rpm? there are a few possibilities. it could also be the iac motor. it is located under the throttle body. i take it you had the engine installed by someone else? if so, take it back to them and have them look at it

Problem is the place that put the motor in is 400 miles away one-way. I did use some carb cleaner and sprayed the hell out of the mass air sensor and the car would then remain running at idle but sputtered a lot. Thinking I will replace the sensor and then see what it does.

Parts store ordered the wrong sensor and the correct one is $169.00, kinda high if Im not sure thats the problem. Not sure which direction to go now.

the car will still run and idle without the maf working, just not well. can you check the timing? best bet is to pick up a haynes or chilton manual and start reading. they have a good diag section with a flow through chart if you arent familiar with cars.

unless you loosened dist timing wont move, its got a chain, they hardly ever fail.has it thrown a code service engine soonlite on? its probly your icm you should be able to see it trying to adjust idle speed, disconnect and see if any differance.if you have vaccum line off you should be able to look and find it

coolant gauge working?

does it have rough idle when only warm or cold too?

could have bad coolant sensor to comp causing ecm to keep fuel trims in cold loop. too rich for a warm engine
