well im not a complete idiot, i know the timing gear is up front and i know the fly wheel is in the back, the tooth was sitting right on the ground under the timing cover. the tooth even has the wear marks where the chain would b. i have neva seen this type of thing happen before either, to tell u the truth my friends and a couple of them r mechanics and they have neva seen sumthin like this. well ill find out soon if i screwed up more than the timing gear and chain cuz im taking the motor out tomorrow and striping down the block

Think about this for a minute.....if it were a tooth from your timing gear, it would have HAD to have shot out from 1)by shooting thru your oil pan 2) by shooting thru your timing cover. In either case there would be a horrendous mess.

Before you pull that engine out, inspect your flywheel, a full 360 degrees. Ill bet you dollars to donuts you just stripped a tooth of the wheel. Even if your are missing a tooth you can still run the motor. You may catch the bare spot every once in a while and have to manually bump the engine, but it sure beats the he// out of pulling the engine.

Holy crap! Yep, and I see the chain peeking through the cover on the second pic too. Why did you do that?
Please take pictures of the mess after you remove the timing chain cover. Then we will no longer be able to say "I've never seen that before".
And for the record, I don't think any of us thought you were a complete idiot!
You gotta admit though, that your story sure painted a different picture on our end.

4 words for your rebuild, pete jackson timing gears, ditch the chain, or if you must use a good double roller timing chain

Yeah, but we didn't know that! I never thought you were crazy...honest!
What really made this so hard to believe that it was a cam gear is the fact that it's a crate engine! How many miles are on the engine?
