What to go for
I am a Norwegian V8 addict who is looking for a nice 80s Camaro (third generation). I used to own an ex-Californian vintage Chrysler, but I wanted something newer and more sporting. Endless hours in the garage also took their toll.
I would be most grateful for any advise on what to look out for when I involve myself in a potential purchase.
For the record, the cost of importing a V8 Camaro from abroad is about $ 18,000, so naturally this is not an option. Sorry if any of you Camaro sellers got disappointed.
I work a lot and do not have all the time in the world to do maintenance. Therefore I value reliability highly.
As a Norwegian, I prefer manual transmission. Is this considered a "safe buy", or would I be better off automatic? The TH 700 seems the most favourable option with its four gears.
Needless to say, I only consider V8 power. Any opinions as to 305 vs 350? Nothing beats the sound of a true all-american V8.
From previous experience I know heavy fronts, wide tires and automatic transmission are not the best prerequisits for handling icy Norwegian roads. Is there any significant weight differenceregarding engines and transmissions? In any case, cars in this country will be prone to rust. Any particular places I should know about?
Also, someone told me something about an improved front end from 1987 onwards. Is this something which should be taken into consideration?
Again, I would be very grateful for any input from you experienced Camaro owners. Prices here range around $20,000 for a nice specimen, so it would be a shame to walk straight into a load of trouble.
Thank you!

if you want a manual trans in a 3rd gen you will have to settle for a 5.0L car , the manual trans was not avalible with a 5.7L because the trans could not handle the torque of the 5.7L engine. if you are looking to spend $20,000 then you should be able to find on that is all but perfect. the 3rd gen cars are not really considered a collector car so they don't exactly hold there value, they simply made to many. as far as inspecting for rust, take it to a body shop with a good reputation and have them inspect it.as far as what yr to buy, the later the better. the 91-92 cars made much better power than the early cars. the suspention on all the 3rd gensare basically the same. so if you get a early car with a good body , you can do simple upgrades and have one of the best handling cars on the road.
