Transmission options
Is there another type of transmission besides the 700r4 that can be used without having the shifter cable problems? or is there a easy fix for the shifter cable on the 700r4?
Whats wrong with the shifter cable?
It broke and all I have is drive, when you start it it will jump forward as if it was started in drive, there's no reverse or neutral. So I got a new cable from camaro central but that broke too at the same spot as the other cable. But reading all the post it looks like I'm gonna need the oem cable from a junk yard.
You shouldn't be breaking shift cables like that, the trans should glide pretty easily into the gears. Is something binding with the trans itself, or is the cable routed a strange way to cause a tight bend?
Well when I did the trans swap for a refurbish one I got the cable from advanced auto. But I didnt drive the car a whole lot till this summer. The trans was put in on may and it all works good till it broke. Then I ordered this one and the guy who did the swap put it in and it worked already til after a few shifts and he said it was binding and then it broke at the same spot as the other cable.
So where was it binding? And was the "it" causing the bind the cable or the linkage on the trans? Have you tried working the linkage arm on the trans by hand with the cable off, to see if it's difficult to move?
I haven't tried that yet, soon as the camaro broke so did the integra with the water pump so I been putting money to that getting it fixed. But I'll ask my friend where "it" was binding and to try the move the shift linkage. I'll also get a picture of the cables where it broke maybe that will help solve the issue. But there was a forum on thirdgen where someone had the same exact problems I did right down to the replacement trans for a refurbished one, and his fix was the OEM cable.

Just to be clear this is not a normal issue with Camaros. Something is together wrong. Shifter cables do go bad but normally they just wear out. 10+ year with a lot of driving maybe. I am sure most unrestored cars still have their original cables. Most the cables that do get replaced never really break, then tend to stretch and they need constant adjustment, owner gets tired of adjusting then replaces it.
Here are a few pictures of the 2 cables. The one installed is the new one from camaro central and is pioneer brand and the other that's being held is from when the trans swap was put in on may from advanced auto, not sure of the brand for it. And my friend said that the shift linkage moves easily with no binding and the routing was normal.
