trans swap questions
whats a good manual trans to swap into my camaro?
i have 89 rs with 305 eventually changing to either a 350 or 383
will i have to change anything to get the spedo to work with the manual trans? do i need longer or shorter driveshaft or will orig work?
ive been told to look for a t5 manual trans...i found one....2 states away....blown...and asking $2500 for it... way too much >_<

do you have a manual now? if no it will take alot of work to swith to it. best way is to get a doner car, that way youll have everything you need . I have the t5 with my 305 and plan as you do to go with a 350 then a 383 later, but I will be eventually going to automatic 350 ot 400. I wont be hiway driving, so wont need the extra gears, but the t5 will work till you get to the bigger motor.

Do some reading on the T5 and the T56 some of them were pretty weak. The T5 will be fine with your 305 but once you step it up to a 350 or 383 look in to rebuilding it stronger or up grading in to a better after market tranny. In my opinion the Sixth gear in the T56 is just a second overdrive gear that is only good on the Hwy, I have the T5 in mine and when I have the money I plan on putting a Tremic TKO 500 in and just sell my T5. Also 2500 for a T5 is way to much.

Yeah, $2500 for a bad T-5? What the hell are they smoking? I'd give him maybe $50 bucks for it if it was at least a World Class trans, if it's from a V6 it's worth throwing to the scrap pile...
Keep your transmission until you step up the engine. Makes everything quite a bit simpler. A T-5 is pretty weak with even a stock 305, put it behind a built 350 or 383 and watch it commit suicide... Maybe not right away, but it will. When/if you decide to to a transmission swap, a T56, Tremec TKO 500, or a muncie 4 speed will work great.

well i love manual trans
i want to beable to use on expressway once in a while and still be able to do some respectable passes on a drag strip
im still contemplating 70s turbo 400 as i can easily get one but it would be from a truck so idk where id get the proper tail and if id have to shorten the driveshaft or if my spedo will work with it.
eh i guess ill prob go auto with the manual setup where it dont shift its, self you do.. ill check in my books for a TCI turbo 400
