Default T-5 Trans

I was reading a post earlier and read about the T-5 being weaker than the autos. I can't seem to find that post again otherwise I would reply to it instead of starting this. Anyway, how much horsepower and torque will a T-5 tolerate. I heard they make stronger T-5s?

It's good for about 300 hp at the flywheel.

i dont know, maybe mine has been rebuildt with new heavy duty gears or something, but my engine puts out a hair over 325 or so to the flywheel and it holds up fine...

300 is an estimate, and is for a safe point of reference. It doesn't mean that at 301 it'll blow up, just like how bridges are actually rated at about half their usefull capacity per vehicle, just to be on the safe side. You could probably put 350 through it, but you would want to avoid smacking the throttle with that kind of power in there.

ah i understand, but just to ease you a bit in case your putting out a bit of power or are doing to on a tight budget ( like myself) you have a little breathing room. Id look for the t56 if you want to keep a manual transmission in it. Thats what im doing.

the t56 is a good option, but theres a lot of work invovled, if you want to cut down on some of the time, a tko 600 doesnt need a new x-member for the trans mount, and from what i'm told, may even be able to use the v6 bellhousing and clutch. plus the tko 600 is cheaper than a t56 and much stronger inside

also, would this be just a direct replacement? NO changes at all?

im finding them on ebay all over... probably a stupid question, but could i snag one ment for a mustang?
from what im seeing about it, it was in the second generation Corvette... the 600 handels up to 600 pound feet of torque. ( might have it backwards, im havin a brain fart) and the 500 up to 500. Good strong transmissions. And they are indeed cheaper. Ill be lookin for one in a junkyard somewhere for sure.
