they had VATS in '89 right??? is the security light staying on for more than two seconds when you first put the key in the ignition??? VATS will disable three main components, the fuel pump, the starter or it will remove power to the injectors.

check to see if the security light stays on for more than 2 seconds. if it does, the resistor has gone bad in the security system.
