Default Squeeky speedo help???

My 1989 IROC speedometer has started squeeking really badly. Can I simply detach the cable housing from the transmission,...pull the cable out of the housing,....gease it up well,...and re-insert it?

It looks like removing the gauage cluster is quite a job and I'm hoping to simplify the process by disconnecting at the tranny.

Yes, but use a graphite based cable lube, parts stores sell it. Grease can gunk up over time, and get stiff in very cold weather.

Will the inner cable actually come all the way out of the housing from the bottom of the caseing, (transmission side)? If so, will it go back in without any trouble?
