Default Speedometer Screwy

Gotta problem. Today my speedometer went crazy on me. When parked, it reads 50mph. I can't get a gauge on my speed at all - it was fine this morning. It does flucuate when increasing or decreasing speed. So, we are thinking it's the speedometer itself. Do ya'll agree? Or could it be the cable? She's an 83 Z. Is there anyway to check before I fork out money for another speedometer?

(I'm new at this so please bare with me )

The cable does not contact the actual needle itself. The cable rotates a ring which uses centerfugal force to turn another ring inside of itthat is hooked to the needle. Maybe dirt got in there but I would say the trouble is in the speedometer.

If it will make you feel better, my speedo doesnt even work. The driving gear in the tranny keeps popping theC clip that holds it on, and you gotta drop the whole tail end of the tranny to fix it. I just try to drive 'speed of traffic'. 2nd time in 6 months its happened. Even when it was working, it was like 10 MPH slow at speeds above 60.

OK, back to your problem. Is the speedo just randomly bouncing around? Have you disconnected the speedo cable and spun it by hand to check for movement?
