hey guys! I'm new to the forums, this is my first post. I have a 1991 RS 305ci project im starting on. There is a whole ton of little problems that are all quick fixes but my primary concern is that under the car most all of the floor is rusted badly and totally rusted through in a couple spots. Friends have suggested welding a plate over it, but obviously you cant weld to rust. So I was wondering if there is a cheap way to patch this or will I need to replace the pans entirely? Also I could only find one source online for the pans and individually they are $370. That will almost total what I paid for the car. I appreciate any tips or input thanks.

 

Unfortunately, there is really no cheap fix to body issues. Get new pans, check around for prices. That $ seems a little steep. Don't cut anything out until you have the pans in your hands just so you'll have something to tack them onto, unless the rust extends beyond the pan size. Are you sure its floor pans, or could it be the rocker panel? I thought I had floor rust, but once it was on a rack, it was just the rocker panel. Thats about a $30 part.

 

It is the actual floor pans. There is a spot right in front of the brake pedal that is totally rusted out. Its just the carpet keeping me from the pavement. The driverside is much worse but the passenger definately needs attention too. I thought that price was a little high myself. Also do you think this a job that could be completed by an amature or leave it for the professionals?

 

check classic industries. I got a free catalog from them @ its huge. There are pan patch pannels but I'm not home & cant check the pricing.

A unibody design relies on the body and the floor for structure unlike a car with a full frame. This means the strength of the floor is the strength of the car. If it was a 72 Chevelle I would say pop rivet some sheet metal in and put the carpet back. But with a Camaro you really want the floor fixed as good or better then new. Maybe you could find a shop that will work with your and allow you to pull everything apart and put it all back together. Maybe you could find someone that moonlights to do it at your house.

There is a good chance this is why you got the car so cheap. Depending on the rest of the car this should be a good investment. It will increase the value.

Don’t forget step two. Figure out why the floor boards rusted out? T-tops?
