Default running without the ecm...

Hey guys, i've got a 86 z28 with a 5sp carb 5.0. For the last couple of weeks its been giving me trouble in the form of missing during acceleration, sputtering, and backfirng. I know when it's coming too because the tach starts to bounce than goes crazy. It gets to the point i'm unable to even give it any gas. So far i've replaced the fuel filter, distributor cap and rotor, spark plug wires, set the timing, and checked the gapping of the plugs. Then the other day it became almost undriveable. So i got out and disconnect the ecm wire coming from the battery. All the problems went away and i haven't had any trouble in the past week. This must mean it's an electrical problem within the ecm system or a faulty sensor correct? and is it bad for me to drive with the ecm disconnected until i can find out what the exact problem is?

first off that car is beautiful. second, the ecm for a computer controled carb is just for making the air fuel ratio different. from what i understand. i ran my car without anything connected to the carb for a while. i dont think it will hurt it. it really shouldnt do much.

thanks its my baby. But i also tried disconnecting the sensor on the carb (air/fuel) i think with the ecm connected, and i still had the same problem. This leads me to believe that it's something with the est(electric spark timing). I've got a month to figure it out before inspection lol

The only issue with having it disconnected is it will run rich because it goes back to default settings. It will also more than likely not advance the dist. like it should. You really should find a new ECM or check your wiring to see if you can find the issue. If you live somewhere without smog checks then you could just convert to a carb.

glad this got brought up
i got a 305 tbi and i plan on getting a new intake maniold and i found oneon summit with carb attached. am i missing anything here or should i be able to rip all my emmisions junk out and run with no computer? is there anything essential that ill have to keep? i planned on hooking the o2 sensor to a air/fuel gauge and just adjust the carb maually.
i live in ohio and emmisions arent realy enforced around here its more of a noise violation concern for exhaust. so i dont care about that.

i was also considering replacing the carb, but im afraid i wont pass nys emissions with an edelbrock or holley [sm=boohoo.gif]. are there any nys drivers here that have done this and passed emissions?
