Default Oil under distributor cap

Hey guys. The other day my '89RS stopped on me and after towing it home and troubleshooting it, I found the module wasn't working. Well I replaced it and got it going but there was also some oil under the rotor at the base of the distributor. I don't see how it could have gotten there. It was not a whole lot but it was noticeable. Have any of you ever seen this before and do I have major problems???

if anything, it might just be working its way up the distributor drive. i dont remember if there is an o-ring at the top, but im sure that there is some sort of seal. have you ever had it apart before? it could also have been someone else who put a lot of dielectric grease in there a while ago and it has since broken down

Thanks for the reply. The engine was built by a local race shop two years ago and they installed the distributor. I have not had it out since.

Remove the dist. cap, grab the rotor, and try to move it side to side. If it's sloppy, your oil is there from pushing past the badly worn bushings.

Thanks. I hope thats all it is, I will check it out tomorrow. I am just glad to hear its not an internal problem with the engine.

One more thing. Is your engine vented well? If it isn't, oil may find it's way into a few unwelcome places.
