So does anybody know what a bad harmonic balancer sounds like? Or possibly an alternator bearing? Ive run this by some friends and they said that a spun bearing will make noise all the time (mine only does on heavy accell and decel, not at idle) and that a bent valve would cause some type of misfire or carb popping (its not)

Whats to go bad on your balancer. Look at it. Is it still on there? The outer ring flush with the inner part? All thats gonna happen that you wont be able to pick right up is the outter ring can spin and your timing marks will not lign up right. An altinator bearing may give a chirp or a whine. Does it get louder with head lights on. with all the elctrical on it is putting it under a load and will make a noise. Make sure your battery is charged good then disconnect the alt and drive it. If it makes the noise under a load in a short distance then you can drive on battery power to test.

loose timing chain or a bad water pump? check the weep hole on the pump to see if the seal is bad. my water pump made an awful clack when it was revved

Its funny you say timing chain, because its really sounds like the sound is coming from under the timing cover. Wouldnt a timing chain that is that loose also throw off your timing?

Water pump? I didnt check the weep hole because the noise is so bad that I figured if it was the pump it would have blown everywhere. (Also, the pump is new. Well, new old stock, the guy that gave me the engine also gave me the pump, it was still in the bag, but looked about 10 years old!)

Good point Microkid
The OEM chains have plastic teeth on the cam gear. Those teeth break. if a lot broke it should not run. But did you say in a previous post (you have soo many on you engine swap I can't keep track without a score card) that the engine was rebuilt before? Though that does not mean another plastic gear was not put in.

you should pull #1 plug, and rotate engine to TDC note (disconnect battery first) use a breaker bar on the harmonic balencer and rotate counter clockwise til #1 is at top dead center, you can do that right? you,ll feel pressure with your finger in the plug hole, continue rotating til the timiong mark on the dampener aligns with the zero" on the timing indicator, the #1 cyl intake valve will open and close before the mark reachs zero on the dampener.now to adjust the valve, you want zero lash" you slowly tighten rocker arm nut, until all clearance is gone between the pushrod and rocker arm, spin the rod between thumb &finger when you feel a slight resistance stop tightening the nut, thats zero lash. dont push down on the ratchet when tightening. Ok after zero lash is achieved, then tighten nut 3/4 turn to complete valve adjustment. adj valves as follows #1,2,5,7 intake and #1,3,4,8 exhaust, then rotate 360 degrees now #6 piston is at TDC on the compression stroke, (with me still) adj valves as follows,#3,4,6,8 intake and #2,5,6,7exhaust, install plugs, valve covers, hook/up batt, and fire her off. good luck, and hope you did,nt hurt her when tried adjusting hydraulic lifters, while she was running.

Dhighway, I adjusted the valve lash as per the manual, just like you posted. Thanks. [:-] (seriously, you paraphrased much better than Haynes, their stuff confused me.)
A buddy of mine came over today and also thinks it might be the balancer. He said that between the inner and outer ring that their are teeth, and they might be mashing together.he pointed out that the noise comes and goes with rev/decel..evens out during no load....
The timing gear are metal. I saw them when I pulled the cover while replacing the oil pan gasket. (whilemotor was out of car during swap)

Hey Mike, you think I have a lot of posts about my swap? I bet Sick has more about his 305! (That is my cheap attempt to deflect attention away from my obvious cries for help....)

I have never seen teeth on the balancer. The ones I have seen that came apart are smooth. They have a thin piece of rubber in between. If they had teeth then they would never spin and I have also seen a few that spun.

I have not seen sick post anything in a long while. Most of what I saw was him sticking up for the 305 when people dog it.
By the way how is your 350 going

Sorry man

I think Im just gonna walk by the car everyday when I get home from work and dump my wallet out on it. This 350 swap has been nothing short of a nightmare. The issues Ive had are endless. (as you all know) Working on this car is not even fun anymore. I really need to take some time away from it, but having this pretty, freshly painted, non operational car in the driveway is KILLING me. Ive even thought about selling it, but Id loose my *** on it with the current noise its making. AND its probably something stupid (like all the other stuff)...............[&o]
