Default New guy

Hi I'm in the Air Force and stationed at Hill AFB in Utah. I have always loved working on cars and my first tinker was a 1985 Silverado 10 truck that was handed down to me when I was 16, my dad bought it new in 85. Then I got a POS 2002 Blazer S10 4x4 that was a lemon, traded that in for a new 2005 Subaru Imoreza 2.5RS and that car was pretty good after some bolt-ons. I then traded it in for the big daddy 2005 Subaru STi (my dream car), had it for 2 years but being a 4 door I thought it would be able to grow with the family but the car was too small to accommodate a rear-facing child seat, even though we have a Durango we still needed it to fit. I traded it for a quad cab 2008 Chevrolet Silverado LS that has a 4" lift with 33" tires and it has been an awesome truck so far. But I am bored since I don't have a car to tinker on, and since I have two daily drivers I decided to pick a project car for me and my son when he gets older. I found a 87 Iroc Z that needs very little work but runs and is in pretty good condition. Didn't get a chance to drive it as the roads here were pretty bad, the heads were rebuilt last year, new exhaust, needs a hood latch cable, passenger side e-brake cable, and front driver torsion bar bolt. Could use a paint job but no rust anywhere. Sounds like the car might have a shift kit as well because the guy said this car shifts differently than the previous 5 Irocs he's had, I'm thinking maybe a corvette servo but I'll find out what he's talking about when I go drive/pick it up it next week. The car also comes with new seals and gaskets for the whole car including the t-tops.I figure 2,000 for a Iroc that runs and has very little problems is a good deal. Here is the link for it, http://www.ksl.com/index.php?sid=0&n...iew&ad=3657408 I looked at it in person and everything is legit. So this is where Ill be spending most of my time on this site.

Welcome aboard Steve. You should have plenty of time to spend on the forum here seeing how you chAir Force guys dont ever do any actual real work. (Its my self appointed title to mess with the noobs around here).

2 grand is a fair price. Those T-Top seal alone are worth about 400 bucks.

From the pics, it doesn't look bad at all. Yes, those t-top seals are worth a few bucks. You will need to devote some time to those to get them right, there are a ton of adjustments to make them correct. You will most likely find all of the weatherstripping will need to be replaced. If you are considering body/paint work, do NOT do any weatherstripping replacement until the paint is done. Best of luck, on whatever you decide to do to it.

This is probably a dumb question but I'm trying to decide where I want to go with the car, as far as restore it and keep it all original or make it a little more fun to drive and engine swap with a manual transmission. I bought it as a project car for me and my son and when he's old enough to give him the keys to it. I'd like to do a 383 stroker but if the car will be worth more original 15 years from now I'd keep it stock. Just like to get some ideas from you guys.

probobly wouldn't give that set up to a 16 yo. As far as value goes, there are so many of these cars only a handfull are worth anything at all. Mine is worth a lot to me as it was my first car, but I couldn't sell it for 1/4 of what I put into it. Just have fun with it. I did what I did to get the car I dreamed about since I was 15. Its nice, but almost a hassle to drive. I don't think you can ever go wrong with staying close to stock.

I'll probably do a compression test after I get it and see where the engine is at and I'm thinking about just doing some mild-aggressive cams and possibly some other engine work, headers, paint, get the parts to fix what it needs right now, and redoing the interior.

You'll want to check the VIN code to see if it's really a 350- most are 305s and the two engines are not visually different. If it is a 350, the eighth digit of the VIN tag should be an 8. An F will indicate a 305.

If it's not, and he can't prove he's done an engine swap, I'd say pass on the whole car. If he can't tell you the truth about the engine, what else could he be lying about?

Welcome aboard, by the way.

Thanks for the input saint I will be sure to call him and get the vin code before I pick it up. The 305tpi camaros don't have rear disc brakes do they? I'm pretty sure everything he's telling me is the truth he bought the car to save for his son and it is the highest end Camaro for the year with every option from the factory. With the economy he is forced to sell this car and his project Vette. This is his 5th Iroc Camaro so I feel pretty comfortable he's being honest with me, but I will check the vin in person as well, thanks again for the heads up.

Also I knew there was a stigma with this generation of Camaro as being the Mullet Machine but honestly I was talking to someone at work about it and someone overheard and was was calling it a trash/redneck car. I knew it had a bad reputation but I thought that reputation has died out and has now just moved onto a muscle car has anyone else endured this lately?

Yes, 305s can come with 4-wheel disks. If I'm not mistaken, a 305 car can come with everything the 350 car comes with, so you really do have to watch for those a-holes that'll try to put one over on you.

If it is legit, then congrats on your new car and welcome to the fold~

Sounds like a good price regardless- I paid over 9000 for my '87 305, three years ago.

And I'm looking into dropping a 350 in it pretty quick; you got any plans for this one or d'you think you'll keep it original?

I haven't heard as much of it up here; most of the redneck trash talk I get about my IROC comes from me, making jokes about it. Just laugh it off and try not to take it personally.
