Default need help restoring my friends third gen

he's got a 87 2.8L and we are working on getting it back on its feet.

it wasn't starting well and we tested the battery and it was so bad that it couldn't even hold a charge long enough for the machine tester - so we got a new battery and its running good now (its been sitting for over a year, btw we live in Minnesota and it sat all winter which was super cold, and we also had to unbury it from snow which took like 5 hours :/)

so now it starts up just fine, one of his tires was almost flat but we pumped it up and its doing good so far, but his service engine light is on and its running RICH AS HELL and white smoke coming out of tail pipes. (oil and tranny fluid look okay (he changed oil and spark plugs/wires summer 2013) however the oil stick smells like fuel....is it because its running rich? He also replaced the 02 sensor summer 2013

what do you think we should do next? we plan on changing the fuel filter soon as well as running either chevron with techron in the gas tank or seafoam through the vacuum lines.

thanks

Flash the codes so you know what errors are present, and to take out some of the guesswork. Do you know the paper clip technique for checking codes?
