Hey everyone. I may soon be aquiring a 1989 Camaro with the 350 and auto trans to restore. One of the first things i would like to do would be swap in a manual trans. Ive been looking around but cant seem to find what transmission goes with the 350 camaro. Ive looked on car-part.com but they dont list the 350 as coming with a manual trans. Just the 305.

Any info would be great!

 

The 350s did not come with a standard transmission, because the T5s couldnt handle the abuse of the 350, they only came on the 305s and the V6s. You could find one. But if you are going to up the hourse power. I wouldnt recommend a stock T5 five speed. If you want to swap in a 6 speed from a fourth gen that will work.

Waste of time...there are so many of these threads on here its not funny. If you are putting any type of power out you will need a built trans. This is not going to be cheap, then you'll need clutch assembly, xmember, etc etc. I just don't think people see how much this costs just to shift.....yep it can be fun, but in my opinion not worth dumping 3K plus into a car unless everything else is good.

 

Instead of going with a 6 speed i am considering going with a 700r4. I can get a core trans for 100 bucks near me that i will rebuild. I've been looking around and there are a lot of different performance build kits out there, but im not sure which are good.

 

If it's an 89 with AUTO then it will have a 700r4 in it

 

If built correctly the 700R4 is a good trans that take quite a bit of abuse and will keep on ticking. Keep in mind the 89 will be using the VSS in place of a cable speedo system.

 

So the v6 also has a 700 in it? Was that for all 3rd gen 6 cylinders or just certain years?

 

All auto 3rd gens received the 700 from I believe 84-92. Prior to these the TH200 was used, this is not the same as the 200R4 though. The latter years the 700 was re-named the 4L60E, which is basically the same except for additional computer controlling. The earlier 700R4s were not as good as 87 and later versions. I do not believe the V6 and V8 trans will be interchangeable. So, if you want to retain the VSS speedo system, just find an 89 V8 trans, and get it rebuilt. There are so many shops that are doing some pretty neat things with these trans, and be custom built. I have a Hughes version with manual/automatic valve bodies with a 3K convertor I use a cable speedo. It works great, but I do need to do a governor spring change to get later shifts. Other than the $40 kit for the spring change, I have no complaints.

 

I thought it had a 350 engine????
