Default Looking for info

Well I'm brand new to the forums, and I'm VERY interested in getting a 3rd generation Camaro as a project car while I'm in school. I'm going for mechanical engineering, and will have an opportunity to join with a team of students to build a Formula car from scratch. What a perfect opportunity to take what I learn to my own car! I'm looking for one without an engine, and may have found an 86 nearby for around $800 with a body in good condition and an ok looking interior. My only questions are mainly about the trims in the 3rd gen. Can every model hold the same engines? Cause I'll be wanting to put a 350 or a 327 in it, and I'm not sure whether the one I'm looking at is an RS, IROC-Z, Z28, and so on, no idea. I'm not totally brand new to Camaros, but I don't pretend to know much about the 3rd gen, other than it has my favorite body style and engines Any help would be appreciated, and if this has already been answered a link would be awesome!

Like Homestar1217, I was wondering the same thing. If the engines between trims are interchangeable so to speak, does that mean the motor mounts are all in the same places? Or, will putting a V8 where a V6 sat require some hacking, filing, and welding?

Good to know! Thanks!

Would it be safe to assume that all V8 motor mounts across the years in the 3rd generation Camaro are the same? Or, did they shift around?

You have to move the motor mount if you switch from a V6 to a V8, But the V8 motor mounts will bolt in. There is no need to cut of hack anything up. It is a little bit of a pain to get the nuts on the back off the bolts, unless you remove some suspension parts, but it can be done. It took me a couple hours ot move motor mounts without removing any suspension parts.

10 minutes tops. use a little flashlight to stick up there to illuminate the whole area. 15 mm wrench with electrical tape and grease to stick the washer to the nut. Elec tape flexes and streches so the wrench can be turned at more angles.

I can barley get the car jacked up and the tires removed in ten minutes, let alone remove the old motor mounts and put new ones on. You must be pretty fast!
