Default kickpanel holes?

when i removed my kickpanels i notices a big hole on each side. rectangular. are these speaker holes?!?! They are partially filled with some kinda tar lookin stuff. If they are, are they wired or do i have to do that? looks like a set of like 4x6 plates would fit in there, like on the dash.

The door hinge bolts are in there. Many cars will have holes like that there so you can get to the nuts or bolts and sometimes wire harness plugs

My former employer has an Iroc with a factory Bose system and it has a big box where the kick panels are suposed to be. Even though you sit low in the car and would be close to the speakers I still think its a bad spot for them
