Default Intake swap, 15 y/o 87 305

Hey, read my sig for car info. I got a edelbrock intake mani and i need to know if when i do the swap from my old one, will i need to check the firing order or anything when i take out the dist. shaft? Because i dont know how to do all that, so im wondering if i can just take off the old mani, and put on the new one, without messing anything up, and not even checking the firing order. Or is it manditory to check it?

Will the swap be pretty straight forward, as im hoping... just unbolt everything... put hoses and linkage to the side, then bolt on new intake, and put everything back in... No worries?

Oh, and what sealer/silicone stuff will i need to put on the intake when i install the new one.

Thanks, all replies are GREAT. Any opinions will help.

When you remove the distributor make a mark on the back of the motor so you know you will put it back in the correct position. Also before you do it make sure that you have all the necessary hook-ups and connections are the same on the new intake. Make sure that you remove all the old gasket material and sand the block down to bare metal. (I use a air grinder with a roloc pad) You can do it by hand but it will take awhile. Use just a normal red RTV sealant and just put a normal sized bead on the front and rear of the block.

( ya i know to mark where its pointing aswell )

like you said, make a mark where the distributor rotor is pointing. i put a piece of tape on the lip of the cowel and made a nice black mark to point where mine was. if its not at a place that makes it easy, give it a short crank untill it is. be sure to use good gaskets and dont be shy with the sealer. when you tighten it down dont forget to work your way out and do NOT over tighten the bolts. use a torque wrench. over tightening is a bad thing with these, especially an aluminum intake

You can do it 2 ways.... #1-Put the motor on TDC and just put the dist. back in with the rotor pointing to the number one cylinder. #2 Just mark the dist. plate at the position it is in and make sure the motor doesn't spin and put it back in the same place. Checking the timing after you have it together wouldn't be a bad idea. It should be 6-8 degrees advanced. Or go to autozone.com and look up the removal installation process

What they said about the distributor...and you don't need to have the engine at TDC. Before you remove the distributor, make a reference mark on the distributor base where the rotor points to. When you drop the dist. back in, just make sure those marks line up again.
And use NO sealant on the intake gaskets themselves. You can put a small dab of RTV on the ends of the gaskets where they rest on the head to help hold them in place. Put about 1/4" bead of RTV on the valley ledge front and back and up the sides to meet the tabs on the intake gaskets. DO NOT use the end valley gaskets if they come with the set, they are one of the bigger causes of intake manifold oil leaks.
Fel-Pro blue intake gaskets are good ones to use btw.

I would bring it around to TDC #1 on the compression stroke before you pull the dizzy, that should have the rotor pointing at the #1 plugwire tower.
You can do it the other way with a mark but this way you know for sure where your motor is.
When you drop it back in if it lines up but doesn't seat all the way to the intake don't panic, just bump the starter a couple times till it drops into the oil pump drive and seats on the intake.
Bring it back around to TDC#1 compression stroke to be sure it's pointing at #1 tower and you should be good to go for a start up.
As another stated it's a good idea to check the timing after you get her fired up.

PS: Don't torque that aluminum intake to cast iron intake specs, you'll break it.
