I found out my 91 rs has a recall on fuel tank and decided to change it our. Dropped rear end, removed exhaust, shield and have new tank to go in.This is not going well. It took over three weeks to get the replacement tank and have forgot exactly how things go in. I need some serious help. Anyone installed a tank in a 91 rs with 5.0

On the passenger side of the fuel tank, almost at the front there is a what looks like a support shelf that is held on by two screws. Is the lip of the fuel tank supposed to rest on top of that sheet metal shelf? or is that just a stop that the fuel tank slides over against? I can't see anyway to put the lip on top of the shelf. Even the filler neck inlet does not line up with opening.

 

IDK, DO you have the old tank for comparison?
See any marks on the old tank where you are talking about?

 

I do not have the old tank. Had to exchange it for the new one at the dealership.That's what throwing me off. It took three weeks to get the replacement and I can't remember all the details.

 

You might spend a few bucks and get a Haynes manual from local auto parts store.
Or visit a local shop having Alldata, with a tin of coffee in hand, and ask them for a printout of instructions.
