Default i need help with rear end

hey guys, i have a 1989 Iroc-Z28 305 TPI camaro
lately ive been noticing a whining noise inside my car while im driving. At first i thought it was the tranny but i had it looked at--the tranny was fine and it stopped whining, now its started back and its loud as ever, i turn my radio full blast and i still hear the noise. I'm thinking it maybe the rear end since it's so old, and the guy i bought it from, his son hauled a boat with it---I know smart right...

but i need to know what it is and if it will be driveable before long and how will i know its tore out..

thanks guys i really appreciate your help

You need to first figure out if it is the rear end or something else. I know the 3rd gens are known to have weak rear ends.....but I've never had, nor has anyone I know personally have had a problem w/ the ten bolt unless they drag with slicks that really bite.

Get it isolated first, then go from there.

Check your oil level in the rearend. If it's low, the r&p gears can sing.

Whining noise could be a bad wheel bearing. You can also pull the cover and check the internals for damage & change the fulid + GM limited slip additive may help. 89 IROC (not Z28) with 305 TPI had 10-bolt LSD 2:73 ratio if it is a 700R4 Auto.

uh i have been messing with welded diffs and now spools.. i just had this problem yesterday.. when you are coastin with no acceleration it doesnt really do it... but when you give it some gas its way loud... what mine was is on the differential carrier there are the two bearings on the sides... the bearings ride in whats called the bearing race... mine was cracked pretty good... i replaced that in like ten minutes ( ive done six diff rebuilds since march..) once i fixed that my car is dead silent again... let me know on the acceleration test...
