Default I need help please!

Hello everybody, I really need help with my friends 1991 camaro z28. Well here is hte story, he told me that everytime his gastank got below half a tank the car would stumble and run really rough, so he thought it must be the fuel pump, he said he verely made it home the last time he used the car. I told him to have fuel pressure checked but he never did, he also told me he had just replaced his fuel filter. So wanted me to install his walbro 255 fuel pump, well it was such a pita with no power tools and 1/4 of gas in the tank but i finally finished after 6 hours. So u know i got everything hooked up and we try to start it up, but the car just wont turn on it cranks but no start. So i loosened the fuel filter to see if any gas goes throw and when he put the key on the on position it sprayed all over. So by the spraying i am pretty sure there is fuel getting throw. I really have no experience with camaros, I would really appreciated some help on wat could couse this, it seems like its obviosly the car is getting fuel. I would like to know the best way to troulbe shoot this, thank you all.

Well, you know it is not the fuel pump, that's about it. I would check the fuel filter (yeah, maybe he replaced it, maybe he didn't) check to see if there are two (I got tricked once by this, someone had installed a second one in line (have no idea why)).

I imagine that the fact that it will not start after you put in the fuel pump is coincidence. Clearly whatever is wrong was deteriorating -- he must barely got it home. Probably would not have started again anyway. It sounds like some sort of fuel delivery rather than ignition (but i admit there are few facts) check the fuel injection (this has F.I. right?)

Sorry I can't help more.

You won't like my answer, but I'd suggest towing it to a good shop. First, its your friends problems, and while it is commendable that you want to help him, don't let him make it your problem. Second, without a lot of diagnostic equipment I think you are in over your head. It's probably something in the fuel injection.

If I were talkcing it myself I would satsify myself it is not ignition (it could be, but I doubt it) and then, I too would take it to my local shop because they have an engine analyzer.

the alternative is to futz around with it, replacing this and that until you stumble on what it is. You might luck out, but I think you've already done one unneeded repair (don't feel bad, he would have needed a fule pump eventually anyway, just sorry you spent 6 hours on it). This is why computer diagnostic equipment exists.

I have a question. Did you replace the stock in-tank pump with another in-tank pump, or did you add an external pump and left the in-tank pump in place?

I replaced the stock in-tank pump for a walbro 255 in-tank. Im getting paid for fixing it, so im trying really hard to fix it myself. Well its not my fault, i told him that he should have had his fuel pressure checked before me changing his fuel pump. So know im gonna have to buy a chilton and check all the stuff

Is the fuel filter on correct! If it backwards, IT WILL NOT FLOW FUEL!

Yeah, wouldn't that be something if that was all it was?

Can't see that it would be, though, because he said he checked the fuel flow (I assume he checked it through the filter), and the filter, however it was, was working well enough so that the car sort of ran, not well, but it was getting some fuel, beforehand.

Good luck guys.
