Default horse power advances

OK i have a few questions. I have a friend with an 84 Z28 and when he saw my 85 with the 2.8 he automaticly told me some things to do for a horse power boost. He told me that if i take of my air conditioner belt off i will get a boost is this true? I am also wondering about taking off my catylic converter because for one i dont have to take admisions tests here in North Dakota, and i have heard that i will get more horse power.

The AC automatcally shuts off at WOT, so u won't gain anything by disconnecting it, execpt feeling a little hot in the summer. IF the cat is in good condition, removing it will show very little gain in power, and it won't be noticed by the butt dyno. You have to keep in mind that the 2.8 is a small motor trying to move a middle weight car, and modifications will show small gains. The best thing is to keep it running good and enjoy the ride for what it is.

Ok so basicly the best way to get more power is just to get a new engine. And that is what I am relaly thinking of doing probably a 305 or 350 but I want to keep it a standard transmission

If you are going to swap motors, by all means get a SBC 350. Don't even think about a 305 its obsolete.

Dont get disgruntled when you try to mate that 60 degree automatic to a 90 degree small block[:-]

when i had my 2.8 firebird, all i could really add was the dynomax exhaust, which i didnt, its basically just a cruiser, they dont make much mods for them and also i think edelbrock makes a cam for the 2.8/3.1 and even with that performance your looking at maybe.. 8-9 extra horse.
